Strongly Condemn the Hong Kong SAR Government and the Police for Suppressing Peaceful Demonstration with Excessive Force

This is a joint statement in response to the police’s brutality and unreasonable use of force on demonstrators in Admiralty on 12 June 2019, and to the subsequent statement made by the Chief Executive, Ms. Carrie Lam.

  1. The vast majority of demonstrators on the day were exercising their right of demonstration in a peaceful and reasonable manner. However, Carrie Lam’s Government and the police have identified the demonstration as a so-called “riot.” The police fired tear gas canisters, rubber bullets, and beanbag shots indiscriminately, directly, and often without prior warning at a large number of young students, citizens in general, and even journalists. The sternness and cruelty of its suppression is unprecedented. We condemn in the strongest terms these excessively violent and cold-blooded acts committed by the HKSAR Government and the police.
  2. In her TV interview, Carrie Lam likened the relationship between government and citizen to that of mother and son. We are indignant about this outrageous analogy. A politician—here, a head of a locality—has compared herself to being a parent of her citizens, and thus bestowed herself with highest honour and respect. Yet, aside from this self-image being in stark contrast to a modern understanding of political ethics, if Carrie Lam were indeed a parent to the citizens of Hong Kong, how could she sanction the ruthless suppression of her children? Her brazen callousness has been appalling.
  3. During this extraordinary period, students have been brave in pursuing justice. We deeply admire their selfless acts, and hope that they will pay attention to personal safety.
