Abstract:

The main aim of this paper is to articulate Full-bore Perceptualism, a novel theory of the emotions, and to argue that it meets the Epistemic Constraint (EC) by drawing upon the idea of zetetic (i.e., pertaining to inquiry) reasons. Here is a statement of the Epistemic Constraint (EC):

If perception and emotion are alike in how they provide justification for beliefs, they must also be epistemically analogous upstream from there.

And here, a characterization of Full-bore Perceptualism:

Full-bore perceptualism is a version of perceptualism which meets the EC by drawing upon resources from Husserlian phenomenology and zetetic epistemology.

As a theory of the emotions, Full-bore Perceptualism will ultimately require justification also in other regards, but I take the fact of its meeting the EC to be significant enough for the argument of the paper to yield a proof of concept for the theory, or to establish its feasibility. Not least, this is accomplished by invoking the idea of zetetic reasons, thereby making contact with exciting recent developments in zetetic epistemology.

Delivered in English.
All are welcome.
