Song-Ming Philosophers’ Poetry and Literature – Mind-Nature and Self-Cultivation (Philosophy and Literature Lecture Series)

Moderator: Dr. Lo Kit Hung (Part-time Lecturer, Department of Philosophy, CUHK; Founder of Hong Kong Practical Philosophy Society)

Abstract:
Taking Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism as the warp and poetry as the weft, this lecture explores the practices of self-cultivation and philosophical reflections on life, death, and destiny by the sages of the past. Beginning with literary appreciation and moving toward conceptual analysis, it examines the interplay between the philosopher’s moral mind and poetic sensibility. The discussion will reveal the path of manifesting and embodying mind-nature, and how poetic inspiration transforms into daily introspection and practical action.

Philosophy and Literature Lecture Series
Literature is part of our everyday life—whether poetry, prose, novels, or drama, all forms of literature express human emotions and experiences. Our growth is inseparable from literature, yet we seldom reflect deeply: What is the relationship between literature and philosophy? For instance, is literature a vehicle for conveying philosophical ideas? Or is literature independent from philosophy, possessing its own unique qualities and charm? This lecture series will explore literature from ancient Greece, France, and China’s Wei-Jin and Song-Ming periods, examining the complex relationship between literature and philosophy—whether as allies or adversaries.
