Professor Michael Slote, UST Professor of Ethics, the University of Miami, U.S.A. (One month, March 2018)

Professor Michael Slote of the University of Miami is the Tang Chun-I Visiting Professor in Spring Term of 2017 – 2018. Professor Slote received his A.B. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard. He is currently UST Professor of Ethics at the University of Miami. A member of the Royal Irish Academy and former Tanner lecturer, he gave the inaugural Feng Qi Lectures at East China Normal University in 2013 and is an honorary professor in Hubei University in Wuhan. He taught at Columbia University, at Trinity College Dublin (where he was a Fellow), and at the University of Maryland, College Park (where he was also department chair), before joining the University of Miami in 2002.

Professor of Philosophy, in the School of Humanities and Languages. B.A. (Hons — Class I) (Sydney), B.Phil. (Oxford), M.A., Ph.D. (Pittsburgh). And FAHA. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Australasian Journal of Philosophy, one of the world’s leading philosophy journals. His main interests are in epistemology and, to a lesser extent, metaphysics. He has published on many aspects of epistemology, including knowledge-how, meta-epistemology, philosophical knowledge, various forms of scepticism, the Gettier problem and defining knowledge, non-absolute knowledge (grades or degrees of knowledge), induction, a priori knowledge, fallibilism, and contextualism. His current research in metaphysics is principally on death, free will, and moral responsibility.
